Reflexology: Give Your Feet a Break

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is the focus of pressure on certain areas on the feet that correspond to points throughout your whole body. The principal behind the science of reflexology is that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology cancels out the effects of stress while it helps the body to reach a place of deep relaxation where it can balance the body systems. Reflexology was first thought to have began in 2330 BC, passing the techniques down through an oral tradition. So, people have been perfecting this art for thousands of years, to your benefit today!

What are the benefits?

There are many different health benefits from reflexology: improving the nerve functions, raising energy levels, increasing circulation, and much more.

  • One of the most well-known benefits is the improvement in circulation throughout the body, which means that blood & oxygen are being cycled through the body more effectively. This means more oxygen reaches vital organs, which optimizes their functions, further increasing the metabolism. This also results in faster healing and re-growth of damaged cells.

  • Reflexology can stimulate more than 7,000 different nerve endings in a single session, which increases function and reactivity.

  • Reflexology can improve bladder function and reduce urinary tract issues.

  • Reflexology can open neural pathways, and this sort of free-flowing neural activity results in a more relaxed state in the body.

  • Reflexology can increase metabolism and energy creation processes within the body by aligning the functioning of various organ and muscle systems.

What can you expect in a reflexology session?

A reflexology session usually can last for 30-60 minutes. The reflexologist will ask questions about the persons medical and emotional history, what illnesses or diseases have been previously diagnosed, medication or herbs now taking as these may affect the way in which the session is performed. The session takes place while the client is laying on a massage-like table. The reflexologist will relax the feet through flexing and similar motions. The session continues using methods somewhat similar to acupressure, usually starting at the tips of the toes and down to the heels on top and bottom of the feet and to the knees. A person may feel minor sensations or nothing at all, but most people feel some sort of relaxation in less than 5 minutes. The session is usually quite relaxing and I’ve had several people fall asleep. Through experience, I’ve found that Reflexology is marvelous for stress management and general relaxation.

How does Reflexology work?

According to the zone theory, a foot has five zones that run from toe to heel:
The big toe is zone 1, and the pinky toe is zone 5. The body has 10 zones that run from head to foot. When you place pressure on zone 1 in the foot, it can relieve pain in the part of the body that’s linked to that area.

Is Reflexology safe for me?

Most people can benefit from reflexology. A study on women with advanced breast cancer found it was safe even for people who are very ill.

If you have a chronic condition, a disease that affects your feet or legs, or if you have arthritis in your feet/ankles, ask your doctor first.
